Dara Abai

Jewish Unity Network (JUN), a non-profit organization, was conceived in 2003, under the auspices of, and with direct consultation with various community rabbis and leaders. JUN’s founder and executive director, Mr. Dara Abaei, has been the visionary and driving force behind this effort since its inception.
This program, envisioned as an outreach effort targeting Jewish youth of Iranian decent between the ages of 18 to 26. Has the following as its primary goals:
Promoting Jewish pride
Repulsing the blight of intermarriage and fighting assimilation
Extending the helping hand to our community’s at-risk youth
Empowering tomorrows leaders through programs at university and college campuses (UCLA, USC, CSUN)
Encountering the love of the Jewish homeland, Israel, through various trips and educational tours

The United States became a haven for Iranian Jewry after the 1979 Islamic revolution, fearing religious persecution, and an unconcealed gradual disappearance of civil liberties in favor of the harsh rule of an intolerant interpretation of Islamic law. Inevitably, as for any other group of immigrants, bei ng unprepared for the differences in culture and traditions of their new home country presented overwhelming challenges for these new immigrants in fitting within their new communities. These challenges, along with the ever – present menace of religious assimilation, have been a destabilizing factor in the Jewish communities originating in Iran, threatening the future prospects of Iranian Jewish youth. Even now, after Twentyfive years since the beginning of the mass exodus of Iranian Jews, the community of Iranian Jews, hitherto reliant for its survival only on its close-knit community and family education, finds its endurance as a viable Jewish community in doubt.
